The goal of this project was for my second grade students to understand how we convey emotions in our art through color, line, and shape. We used an emotion color wheel and the students were also able to study the color wheel quite intensely while mixing the colors to match their moods. Drawing self portraits with young children is always interesting, they love to look at themselves and capture their image.
We started off the 2011-2012 school year in sixth grade doing large scale flowers in the style of Georgia O’ Keefe. The students each picked out their own fake flower to draw from. Once the drawing was done I demonstrated different watercolor techniques, encouraging students to utilize the full range of the value scale. They turned out really nice and people were impressed with the large scale.
